After a difficult night’s sleep, I got up just after 06:00hrs, definitely tired but too restless to stay in bed a moment longer and recognising the best thing I could do was endeavour to get to the gym an hour before my rehab class, get a good warm up on the machines and hopefully round things off with some swimming after the rehab.
My capacity for swearing early in the morning is extraordinary. I have definitely broken my 2026 PB for swears before 07:00hrs. I think it’s the only way I can function at this time of the morning as I get ready for whatever the day has in store. And I’m always running late.
Last night’s workshop-type gig wasn’t great for me. While I am generating a lot of new material, I am so overwhelmed by pressure right now relating to just life I guess, that I can be running through the material for hours but it’s not quite lodging in my head and last night was a similar problem. I changed the start of the set just before I went on because I realised I wasn’t fully remembering my second bit of new material, so I thought I’d shorten that new bit, and then I ran out of time to get a brand new segment in. It’s one of those things, you go home and try to forget about it. But it was one of those nights where I got home knowing I would be just that bit happier if I wasn’t doing comedy. At this point in my life, I don’t have many alternatives but while it can give you extraordinary highs, it’s not a recipe for happiness.
Now, as of last night, I have a dental emergency. So rather than go to bed, I fired off an email to the dentist. I do have a fraught relationship with these guys since I joined them in the spring. I had a fraught relationship with the last one, mind you, but these guys, their reliance on AI to take calls, really winds me up. When you finally get an appointment, you turn up to find three of them sat behind the reception desk not looking very busy and you think, ‘Why couldn’t you take the call?’ This is the world now.
I don’t know if they listen to the AI messages afterwards, or in my case, my bust ups with AI, or if these messages are transcribed. If the former, it is likely they have a good chuckle. Hopefully they can see me by tomorrow, by which time I’ll have come through tonight’s gig having remembered some of the new and old stuff.
